Red Rope trips are charged according to your membership band.
If you are not sure which band you are, look at the Membership Charges page
Non-members: May come on a trip to try first if space available. They will need to assess their band.
Trip Charges (these rates apply for all trips January 2024 onwards)
| General Hut trips | Transport charge* | ||
| Band | Nightly Trip charge** | ||
| 1 | £11 | 4.2p | |
| 2 | £16.50 | 5.9p | |
| 3 | £22 | 7.6p | |
| 4 | £27.50 | 11p | |
| 5 | £33 | 12.8p | |
*Transport charge is @ pence per mile. This example is at a petrol cost of 150p per ltr. (June 2023). For bands 4 & 5 the rates shown only apply to journeys during the trip. For journeys to/from the trip, bands 4 & 5 pay at the band 3 rate (i.e. 7.6p in this example).
**Nightly trip charge: This is a per night charge, so multiply it by the number of nights of the trip (no reduction if staying fewer nights). e.g. a weekend trip is normally 2 nights. A multiplier will be applied if the accommodation is particularly expensive.
It pays for the accommodation, and includes all your food, i.e. breakfast, packed lunch, evening meal, hot drinks etc excluding food on the arrival night, which people travelling together normally organise themselves or eat on the way.
Note Early Booking Discount (EBD) no longer applies (it was removed for trips from January 2025 as agreed at the 2024 AGM)..
Children: children over five are charged at half the parents charge, or band 1, whichever is greater. Under fives are charged similarly for the parents’ transport element only.
LMC Group Trips: For Booking prices on Group Trips at LMC huts – please see the sheet available from the LMC Hut Access page
Individual nights at LMC Huts – individual bed-nights can be booked very cheaply by Red Rope members. See the LMC Hut Access page for details.
Cancellation Rules
Please note that in the case of cancellation the following rules apply:
- full refund if the cancellation is made more than 3 months before the trip starts.
- 25% payment of full nightly charges if the cancellation is made between 3 months and 1 month before the trip starts.
- 50% payment of full nightly charges if the cancellation is made less than 1 month before the trip starts.
- No refund will be made for public transport fares already paid.
These rules are in place because hut bookings are paid in advance – club funds will almost certainly suffer if anyone drops out late on. You may appeal to the National Committee through the secretary in exceptional circumstances.
Regional trips may adopt these rules or apply their own criteria.
For further details please see the Trip Organisation Guide in this website page: Trip Planning.
Transport (mileage) charge
We normally travel to trips in shared cars. Transport charges are not paid when you book, but calculated and paid up while on, (or after) the trip. You pay a banded charge per mile for the total number of miles you travelled to get to the trip (capped at the band 3 rate), plus miles travelled around locally while on the trip. You can calculate in advance approximately what it will cost to get to the destination and back, then allow a bit extra for ‘on trip’ miles.

Using public transport
Red Rope members are normally expected to travel to trips in shared cars. However, where a member wishes to travel to a trip by public transport, or to travel separately using their own transport, this must be agreed with the trip organiser in advance of the trip. Trip organisers will be flexible, but they may refuse where this would lead to a shortage of cars on the trip, including for local transport, or to unfilled spaces in cars – the norm is 3 in a car (i.e. a driver plus 2 passengers).
Public transport and trip finances
For National trips, charges have been agreed regarding what the member pays to the trip or is reimbursed if travelling on public transport. Regions can use these rules or use their discretion.
The member pays the cost of their ticket. Below ‘band 3’ some of the cost will be reimbursed; band 1 pay 55% so receive rebate of 45% and ‘band 2’ pay 78% so receive rebate of 22%.
